Off-Season Updates - 6-4-23

-The 2023 BHS Track and Field season wrapped up today at the MHSAA DI State Finals. This season saw the boys win their 2nd team Regional Championship, another sub 8 min 4x800m relay, along with a school record setting All-State performance in the Pole Vault!

-Athletes wrapping up their season are encouraged to take a two week break from training. This pause allows the body to rejuvenate for a strong summer leading into a fast fall. Runners with questions about how best to approach this transition period should reach out to their captains and/or coaches.

-All BXC runners that have trained consistently throughout the winter and spring should consider getting their Ferritin (blood iron stores) levels checked. Even runners with excellent diets should still get checked periodically if they've been engaging in consistent quality training over several months. This is especially true for athlete's expecting to compete at a high level in the fall (it's hard to run fast if your muscles aren't receiving enough oxygen). What Is Ferritin by Dr. Kornoelje explains the importance of iron, the nuance of low ferritin levels, and a plan for checking and treating iron related issues. The Jack Daniels videos: When to get Blood Tests and Iron Stores provide additional insight on the importance of blood tests for competitive endurance athletes.

-There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, June 7th after school in Coach Elsey's classroom, A10, for all returning and new BHS students interested in competing this fall.

-Members of the BXC team met with future athletes during our SMS lunch visit. The Incoming Freshmen packet is linked here. Please forward this packet to any new athlete/parent that has an interest in running with BXC this summer and fall.
